Legacy Architecture Compatibility:

Legacy systems often struggle with compatibility issues when integrated with modern technologies, impacting performance, reliability, and security. The rapid evolution of emerging technologies, including grid monitoring tools, AI, and advanced cybersecurity solutions, demands ongoing investment in infrastructure upgrades to ensure these legacy systems can continue to support future operational demands. Collaborating with industry experts and strategically prioritizing upgrades can help address these challenges effectively.

Why It Matters

Aging grid infrastructure poses challenges to compatibility with newer technologies, cybersecurity protections, and modern control systems. Legacy systems can limit automation, slow response capabilities and create vulnerabilities that affect the reliability and security of the Bulk Power System (BPS).

As digital tools become more essential to grid operations, these legacy constraints present growing operational risks.

What SERC Is Doing

SERC works with registered entities to identify legacy systems and assess associated risks. It supports transition planning for infrastructure upgrades and highlights industry best practices to improve compatibility. SERC also includes legacy technology considerations in its event analysis, reliability assessments and technical outreach.
